NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Follow your heart, not the herd

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Weekcelebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

More new classrooms, preschool places and teachers in $17.3 billion education budget

NSW Budget 2018 features historic firsts for education, including record funding to expand the number of new and upgraded schools, unprecedented investment to air condition more classrooms and universal pre-school for three year olds.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet, Education Minister Rob Stokes and Early Childhood Minister Sarah Mitchell outlined a range of new initiatives funded by the $17.3 billion education budget in 2018-19.

The Government will be investing $6 billion over the next four years to deliver more than 170 new and upgraded schools, including planning for more than 20 new projects.

"We are proud to be making this unprecedented investment into the future of our children," Mr Perrottet said.

"This year's NSW Budget takes our already record school building program to another level – a massive 170 schools new and upgraded schools over the next four years.

"That brings our total schools building program to 230 new and upgraded schools since 2011."

"The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government's strong financial management has allowed us to invest so heavily in our schools and education system."

Mr Stokes said communities right across NSW will benefit from this record investment into education.

"NSW is experiencing an increase in school enrolments and we have in place an unprecedented program of investment in new and upgraded schools to meet this demand," Mr Stokes said.

A staged investment of $500 million is being allocated to provide cooling for schools, while improving the indoor environmental quality, through the installation of smart and sustainable air conditioning systems powered by solar energy.

In another landmark initiative, NSW will become the first Australian state to provide universal access to community preschool for three years old under a $197.8 million program.

"Because of this historic investment, average daily fees will decrease significantly and the savings will go directly back into the pockets of hard working families," Mrs Mitchell said.

This brings total spending on early childhood education to $474.3 million in 2018-19.

Other education investment in the 2018-19 NSW Budget includes:

$160 million to be spent in 2018-19 to continue its blitz on planned school maintenance, part of a record $747 million investment over four years;
$71.8 million to implement the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy in NSW schools;
$50 million in additional flexible funding will be provided to government schools to implement the School Leadership Strategy - freeing up principals and school leaders from administrative work;
$3 million for the first comprehensive review of the entire school curriculum since 1989;
$2.8 million to encourage the preservation and study of Aboriginal languages;
$30 million to continue to deliver greater access to green space and sports facilities in public school playgrounds through the Share Our Space program, and;
Funding for around 900 extra full-time equivalent teaching positions in NSW government schools.

The NSW Government will also invest $1.3 billion on non-government schools, an increase of 7.5 per cent on 2017-18. This includes a $32 million increase in the Building Grants Assistance Scheme over four years for capital works projects to support enrolment growth in non-government schools.

The record $17.3 billion investment in education allocates $15.7 billion for recurrent expenses and $1.6 billion for capital investment in 2018-19.

TLSC Sport Mid Year Report 2017

School sport is a mandatory component of the school curriculum in NSW and representative school sport is one of the key pathways for gifted sporting students at TLSC to develop their talent. To date 2017 has been an extremely exciting and successful one for TLSC Sport. The College has fielded teams and individuals in almost every NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association (NSWCHSSA) and All-Schools sporting competition. Our students have excelled themselves and represented the College with pride and determination. Congratulations to the students who have represented TLSC this semester. A big thank you also to our coaches. On behalf of our students I thank you because it is your commitment and dedication that provides the conditions for their success.

Do You Know How We Ensure Safe Schools?

The Department of Education has high expectations for safety in every school. Regular, rigorous checks are conducted of every school's processes and practices to ensure that schools comply with DoE expectations.

Every school has clear precautions for any situation that may be a risk to students and staff, and there are specific plans for each school. Our campus is consistently rated as being exceptional and therefore we are rated as being safe, inclusive and respectful because of the precautions and processes we have in place. All students and staff are trained in all aspects for these precautions. We hold regular practice runs of many processes which often go unnoticed by students since they are simply a part of what we do as a campus.

Schools do not publicise their precautions beyond the school grounds since that can be counterproductive in ensuring the safety of all on site.

Social media including texts, Facebook and the like can be counterproductive in managing these precautions and have in many cases have created more risk and extended the time that the precautions stay in place. The rumour mill is not helpful, building confusion and panic. We therefore expect that all students and staff will not use mobile devices at the time unless directed by the principal to do so.

When and if precautions have to be used because of a potential risk, the campus follows its processes and as such ensures that all students and staff are safe. Those processes include:

informing parents and carers that precautions have been put in place to ensure that students and staff not at risk of harm, and
briefing students about any need to use precautions as soon as possible.

If precautions need to be used at the end of a school day students and staff are debriefed at the beginning of the next day. If precautions need to be used during the day, students and staff are debriefed before they leave school that day.

Where students or staff require additional support as a result of the precautions being put in place, such support is made available through the school and the department.

Be assured that we, along with every school, see student safety as our highest priority. We act accordingly and appreciate your support for our work in this area.

P&C at TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus

This campus has had a small, strong P&C for many years. Members have come from all our partner schools and many have stayed because it is a lovely group of supportive people. Most are moving on because their children no longer attend the campus.

We meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month from 4.00-5.00pm with tea, coffee and a chat from 3.30 if you want to join earlier. No P&C matters are discussed until 4.00pm.

Over the years decisions have been made to ensure that P&C is not onerous for our parents. We just want parents to come together to share the good things happening for our children and to put forward ideas.

Our P&C does not hold fetes, sell uniforms or do big fund raisers. The only P&C fundraisers are

Surfest results 2017

Every year Newcastle's world renowed Surfest attaches a large number of schools from south of Sydney to the North Coast. This event is a major showcase of up and coming surfing talent amongst our young people.

Six teams of surfers from the college consisting mostly of TLSC Tumbi Umbi students- competed in Newcastle Surfest. This prestigious event has some major talent and once again Tumbi and the college achieved some fantastic results.

This year our girl team dominated every heat they were in and eventually took out the event in the final against some much older students. A massive achievement so our girls who surfed well outside their age group! Needless to say our girls can be proud of their efforts!

The boys' teams from Tumbi performed well making it to the semis, however, it was the Entrance Campus team – Tumbi graduates and defending champs- that make it to the finals. Although they were narrowly beaten the margin between 1^st and 4^th was 2 points. Our boys can be proud of their efforts.

Houses? What's Happening with Houses?

This year in response to changes occurring in education and our drive to do the best we can for all students, we have added four new houses to our existing houses. Our student focus groups supported the move and looked forward to it with excitement.

Students have been allocated to classes then classes allocated to houses according with each house having no more than 130 students from years 7 to 10. This is an extension of the way our roll calls operate. Extensive discussions were held between Head Teachers, Year Advisors, Deputy Principals and Principal around the make-up of all classes. No decisions were taken lightly and all factors considered.

All staff are also allocated to a house according to their classes with each house having 9-10 staff as a part of the house.

The eight houses are now and are based on students' suggestions

The major changes to the campus from houses are around how students and staff work together to support young people, their wellbeing and learning while strengthening the already strong approach we have. There are no changes for parents and carers.

Fabulous start to 2017

The start of the 2017 school year is a special one for this campus. It is 20 years since quality public education stared being delivered on this site to our community. The campus has gone from strength to strength since 1997 with many changes based on the needs of our students and community. It will be a pleasure to celebrate the development of the campus in late October.

Currently we are planning on having the following events

Celebratory dinner on Friday 27 October at Shelley Beach Golf Club
Open Day on Saturday 28 October with tours and events planned and run by students

If you have any memorabilia that you would like to share with us, we are happy to accept it and make copies before returning to your safe hands and happy memories.

As well as the excitement of turning 20, we have had a brilliant start to the year with all students and staff settling into action very quickly. Thanks goes to every family for the effort that has gone in to making sure every student arrived n the correct uniform and had their equipment ready to go on Day 1.

Enrolments are strong and as such we have had no need to produce a new timetable as can happen when more students arrive than anticipated.

Our new students have been amazing in their knowledge of campus routines and have made friends with new peers quickly.

We also welcome several new members to our team including

Slight changes have also occurred in our Administration staff with Mrs Ackerley on secondment to support other high schools to implement the new finance software in Term 2. We wish her well and are proud of her achievements.

Our campus improvements continue with our learning spaces being updated, full external clean and several large pieces of equipment being replaced. As always our General Assistants and cleaners work tirelessly over the break to make the campus sparkle!

We will continue with work on learning spaces as we move further into the year. Watch this space!

Wednesday 16 November is our major Orientation Day where we welcome current Year 6 students to our campus for taster lessons and activities where they will get to know each other as members of this campus. Much work goes in to make the day a success for everyone. We look forward to welcoming our new students and their families on this day.

A parent and carer session will be held from 6.00 – 7.00 on Wednesday evening.

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus enjoys a strong partnership with the Kuriwa Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) which is fostered on the principles of reconciliation and respect.

The AECG is an Aboriginal community organisation that works with schools and the community to better the outcomes for Aboriginal Education.

Start up information for Years 8, 9 and 10

Years 8, 9 and 10 return to campus on Friday 29 January by 8.00am. We look forward to seeing them looking ready to learnin the ir uniform and correct black leather shoes. Once students arrive at the campus they are to remain in the COLA area and Basketball Courts. When the roll call bell rings, students are to report to their roll call room from 2015.

We look forward to welcoming them back and having a rewarding year as they achieve personal best.

Year 7 start up information

Year 7 2016 commence their time in secondary school on Thursday 27 January at 8.00am. Students need to wear their normal school uniform because for this Thursday only they will not be doing sport. Once arriving at the campus, students need to come to the large COLA area ready for their year assembly at 8.00am.

We look forward to welcoming them as Year 7 2016. They have been well preapred through Orientation and the fabulous work done by their teachers in primary school.

Succesful shave for a cure event

Congratulations goes to Mr Skidmore, Mrs Dignam and the Student Leadership Council who organised and ran a highly siccessful fund raising event on the campus. The campus raised over $3,000 for childhood cancer and as such showed our heart and commitment to doing good things for others. The evnt featured stalls, music, cook stands, guessing competition and the Big Shave. Thanks goes to the local hairdressers who came in and gave their time to support this event. Many students and staff went home looking "refreshed" after some lenghty locks were cut.

Whooping cough information for schools

There is an outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) in NSW, mainly affecting school-aged children.

Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Whooping cough can spread to anyone at home, including younger brothers and sisters. Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for babies.

Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. The infection can occur even in fully-vaccinated children. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and may be worse at night.

Children with these symptoms should see a doctor.
If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough in your school-aged child, please let the school know and keep your child at home until they have taken 5 days of antibiotics. Keep coughing children away from babies.
Whooping cough vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades with time. Check that all your children are up to date with their vaccines, due at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 4 years and 12 years of age (offered to all Year 7 students through the NSW school-based vaccination program). A booster is also recommended at 18 months of age.

A booster dose of vaccine is also recommended for adults that are in contact with young children, such as school staff and parents. Pregnant women are recommended to have a booster dose during each pregnancy and this is funded by NSW Health. Those who are new parents or carers of babies should consult their general practitioner about appropriate immunisation.

Your local public health unit can provide advice about whooping cough on 1300 066 055 or visit the NSW Health website for information for childcare and schools about whooping cough.

Special Religious Education at TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus

Parents/caregivers in public schools have the right to have their children receive instruction in their preferred religious persuasion, where authorised teachers of that persuasion are available.

Special Religious Education (SRE), traditionally referred to as 'Scripture', is available at the school and is run by authorised volunteers from The Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay and the Tuggerah Lakes Christian Board which comprises of Anglican, Baptist, Church of Christ, Evangelical, Presbyterian and Uniting denominations.

Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College is retraction the SRE letter that was distributed Week 1 Term 4 2015. Inconsistent information was published in that letter regarding the Department of Educations SRE policy and procedures.

The school uses the information provided at enrolment to set up SRE classes. Students continue in the same arrangement each year, unless a parent/caregiver has requested a change in writing. At any time, you have the right to change your SRE nomination or to withdraw your child from the nominated lessons. A note to the Principal will affect this change.

SRE will run on a rotational timetable across Stages 4 and 5. In the times set aside for SRE not attending are located in a seperate physical space from SRE classes, supervised by classroom teachers and will be completing meaningful activities such as homework, reading and private study.

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus ended Semester 1 with a wonderful celebration of achievement and effort. Congratulations to students and staff for yet another highly successful adventure to the centre of Australia. Our intrepid travellers were just amazed by the vastness of their travels and the different beauty thery saw beyond the coast. The dream team has done it again!

Two exceptional wins over Wadlaba Community School. We were the negative side for all rounds and at times this can be a difficult position to be in, however, the skill and determination of our debaters enabled them to develop a strong case and they defended it well to gain the win. The topics were:

That all schools should have CCTV cameras where students congregate;

That athletes should receive a life time ban for committing serious off-field offences.

The team consisted of Jacques, Jess, Heather and Elissa -what a star studded lineup! They all spoke confidently and with pride. The adjudicator suggested we nominate Elissa and Heather for the regional team trials because they are just that good.

Disaster recovery centre at Wyong Grove

Review of special religious education in schools

The NSW Department of Education and Communities has commissioned an independent review of the implementation of Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE) in NSW public schools.

The review is being conducted by an independent research company, ARTD Consultants. This company provides services in evaluating public policy. The review will inform ongoing improvement of SRE and SEE for the Department and providers.

Campus operations for Monday 27 April

Although our grounds will still be waterlogged and our phones out for a little longer, TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus will be operational with usual classes on Monday 27 April. All students will be expected to be in attendance except in extreme circumstances. Students need to come prepared for Week B. We will be conducted our ANZAC Day Assemblies on Monday and look forward to welcoming our special guest speaker.

Thank you to our students, parents and carers, the wonderful "Ross" (who in driving by stopped to help us out) and to community including Red Bus for your support as we all worked to bring a safe learning environment back into practice as quickly as possible.

Whilst TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus will be open on Friday 24 April there will be minimal supervision for those students on site since some staff are having difficulty getting to work due to the storm damage and flooding effecting the whole community.

The Red Bus Company advise that they will be providing transport where possible and safe, however, there are many areas within our campus area the Red Bus Company still cannot access due to fallen trees, fallen powerlines and flooding.

Please be aware that the program offered to students will not be their usual timetable.

The campus does not have an operational phone system and are relying on mobile phones and emails.

Parents and carers are asked to make a decision based the facts in this letter, their child's needs and the availability of safe transport as to whether or not their child attends the campus on Friday 24 April.

Please check our website or our twitter account @TLSC_TumbiUmbi again on Friday afternoon for information regarding Monday 27 Apil when we expect to be fully operational.

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus delights in welcoming parents and carers of Year 7, 2015 to an informal evening with teachers on Monday 9 March from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

This will be a great opportunity to find out what programs students are learning, how their relationships are building and the plans the campus has for the rest of the year. We look forward to chatting with our parents and carers and letting them in on the world of modern secondary schools.

Change to bus timetable - Wamberal area

From Monday 16^th February 2015 the morning school bus No; 59 and the afternoon school bus No;27 will change to better meet the transport needs of students in the Wamberal area.

The morning bus No. 59 will start at 7.08am and will travel along the Central Coast Highwayy to Old Gosford Road and then return to Tumbi Road to continue to TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus as normal.

The afternoon bus No. 27 will depart TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus as normal and travel the same as the morning to Old Gosford Road , then returning to Tumbi Road and continue as has been the usual route.

Thank you for supporting these changes as we adjust to new campus boundaries and seek to deliver our usual high quality service to students, parents/carers and the campus.

Year 10 graduates in style

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus is proud to have celebrated the graduation of over 280 Year 10 students who have successfully completed their 11th year of school education. Our graduates shone as they shared this milestone with their families and princiapls from the schools in TLLC that directly partner TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus. Awards were given, speeches made, tributes given and friends remembered as we ensured that the memory of the last four years reflected the wonderful young peoiple graduating. We all look forward to sharing their many and varied future successes.

Canteen revamp

Our Canteen is undergoing some great changes to ensure that our service is meeting the needs of students and also allowing parents/carers to make lunch orders online. These changes are the result of significant work with students and the P&C. We will have a new menu in place from Monday 17 November. We will also be introducing orders for lunch and also recess for food items. Orders will need to be made by 8.00am either using the service of Flexischools.com.au or giving a completed lunch order bag to the Canteen. Thank you for taking a moment to read the letter for parents/carers given to students on 10 November. A copy of the new menu is also attached. We are expecting strong support from students. The new menu also sees a 10 - 15% cut in prices.

Senator's visit

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus has hosted two important visitors to our campus - Senator Scott Ryan, Parliamentary Secretary for Education and ther Honourable Member for Dobell, Karen McNamara. Both took the time to come and see the workings of our AVID program and the impact that it is having on students. Needless to say, both Senator Ryan and Ms McNamara left our campus thoroughly impressed by the program and our great students. It is clear that AVID is working for all students, staff and community. We thank you for trusting us to run this program and look forward to seeing it grow even further.

Tumbi wows wakakirri

Early in August we were treated to nothing less than a mind blowing display of teamwork and sheer grit and determination from our Wakikirri Crew as they stormed the stage to perform "The Dark Side of Fame".

Our students absolutely shone in all areas of their performance, projections, soundtrack, stage work, sets and public speaking. They set their mind to the task and in doing so showed dedication which on the night meant we were treated to a show that knocked the socks off the judges.

We returned from the finals in September victorious as the dramatic story winners for 2014 and a first in choreography. An outstanding result for everyone!

Tumbi panics

Wednesday 10 September, those who attended Tumbi Panics were treated to an excellent night's entertainment through the showcase of our students' many and varied talents.

The evening commenced with a stop off at the Candy Bar for refreshments, a quick photo at the photo booth and a chance to walk the red carpet through the blaze of lights and into the PWS.

The thought behind the staging of the event showed the level of expectation that students and their teachers had for the evening. What came next did not disappoint.

Jack, Abbey ad Paris were suitably relaxed and polished in their MC roles and as such put the performers at ease and the audience in the right frame of mind to really listen to and watch each act.

At the end of the evening a total of 36 acts performed ranging from monologues (and weren't they telling a story), dance (oh to be able to move like that). Mime (the power of facelessness can never underestimated), film (Utopia rocked...again) and drama pieces.

Once again our students and their teachers put themselves out there to show the learning that occurs in their classrooms and the impact that learning has on shaping thoughts and actions.

A huge thank you to Ms Taylor and Ms Proust for their tireless work in preparing students for this event and for making it an assessment practice that matches the purpose of their subject area.

Hats off the Mr Chittick and his team for behind the scenes in preparing the staging - the sets crew and the stage ninjas were awesome and as for the Photo Booth and Candy Bar….Congratulations and thank you to the rest of the CAPA Faculty for your team approach to everything that you do and the supportive manner in which all events are undertaken. Thank you to Mr Brailey for ensuring that the team have every opportunity to spread their wings, try new things and grow from the trust, commitment and leadership shown them every day.

It was great to see so many staff there supporting students and colleagues and enjoying a wonderful night with parents, carers and community.

Tumbi rocks

August saw the campus enjoy our annual rock concert. Students, teachers, parents and carers worked together to make the event a shining example of the depth of talent in our campus and from our community. The artists were polished and showed courage in storming the stage and tackling some challenging musical pieces.

Performers were drawn from all year groups and all programs offered here. The inclusiveness of the campus was clear for all to see and enjoy. As always the staff wowed the audience with their musical talent and as such showed that they too love the spotlight and the lure of performing.

Book week celebrations

Our library has burst into life with the spirit of reading. Our committed librarian, our spontaneous library manager and the wonderful English Faculty have been supporting the growth of Book Week Celebrations on our campus - yes just as in primary school!

Who says teenagers don't need to read, appreciate literature and have fun at the same time.

Our parade of book characters was a success with students and staff adopting a range of themes and some very intericate costumes. We look forward to seeing this celebration grow as it becomes a key part of our campus celebrations.

Snow trips an outstanding success

Last week we supported two major excursions for our great young people on the campus. Both excursions focused on the Australian Snowfields with Years 9 and 10 PASS students and the entire Utopia Program heading south to a very different climate.

Both excursions were an outatanding success for everyone involved. Students and staff returned home to the coast on Friday afternoon and late Friday night to what was hopefully a restful weekend.

Neither of these experiences could have occurred without the amazing teamwork of colleagues and students who kept up the usual campus routines without a hitch. So proud of you all!

Canteen Survey

The Canteen is a key part of the campus and as such we are all keen to see it operate inline with other changes occuring within our world.The Canteen and P&C are currently tweaking the Canteen to best reflect that food tastes and payment methods used within the broader community.

Our Wakakirri Team burned up the stage at the National Insititute for Dramatic Arts (NIDA). We thought we were just biased but no, the judges could not provide enough praise for our thoroughly polished and professional performance. The story, staging, costumes, makeup, transitions, projections, choreography, performance and teamwork was obvious to all. With only three awards announced on the evening, we took out the Public Speaking Award - go Bree and Chloe!

As a result of that performance, the Wakakirri Team will be competing in the finals in late September and contesting the following categories

Our annual rock concert, Tumbi Rocks was an amazing evening which showcased the talents of students and staff. With over 35 acts, the campus is jumping with musical andperformance talent. It was a joy to see parents/carers and teachers deeply engaged in conversation about children and their learning. Every student acquitted himself or herself admirably, displaying all that is great about sport and how it builds character and confidence. New sports uniform from 2015

Alert - Uniform Changes for 2015

From the beginning of 2015, Year 7 students will commence their enrolment at Tumbi in our new sports uniform. Students in other years can elect to wear the new sports uniform in 2015. It is expected that in 2016 all students will be wearing the new sports uniform.

The sports uniform will consist of a revamped unisex polo shirt (which still displays our beautiful jade colour) and matching sports shorts. The uniform will be available from Lowes at Bateau Bay. The sports uniform will be the same for both boys and girls and is designed to ensure freedom of movement while maintaining modesty. Students have been requesting a specific sports uniform and it is a pleasure to be able to make this change for our students

It is hoped that samples of the new uniform will be made available by the end of this term.

New position - Community Links Manager

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus has always valued its relationship with parents, carers and community. We acknowledge that our partnership is all about supporting your child and our students to achieve personal best while together we shape their future.

The wise decision has been made to appoint Ms Linda Pountney to the position of Community Links Manager to assist parent, carers and the campus to take our relationship to another level. Ms Pountney will be known to many members of our community as one of the campus's highly professional and helpful administration staff. Ms Pountney is also Secretary of Kuriwa AECG and as such brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will benefit students, community and campus.

Now for a few words from Linda, herself

I would like to briefly introduce myself to you as your Community Links Manager. I have worked for Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College – Tumbi Umbi Campus for 5 years and I am pleased to move into this role for two days every week, usually on a Thursday and Friday.

My role will include coordination of broad community contact, setting up specific contact between parents and staff, assisting in the implementation of programs for students, creating an informative newsletter for Aboriginal families. I will also work with the broader campus to support parental involvement in campus functions.

My focus for the 2014 school year is to actively involve parents in campus activities, assistance in resources and to strive for even greater achievements for students

Students meet the demands of preparation, planning and execution of this trek with the a strong sense of common purpose and responsibility for each other. ANZAC Day Orations

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus student leaders, Maddi O'Gradey Lee and Abby McNeill delivered heartfelt orations to our community on 25 April. Maddi spoke at the centaph at The Entrance while Abby spoke to veterans at the Bay Sports Club who were not able to attend the centaph. Those in attendance could not help but be moved by the memories and sentiments evoked by our students.

Maddi and Riley O'Keeffe wrote an amazing speech outlining the links between the ANZAC tradition and the Battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam War. The speech reminded us all of the facts of the battle and the commradeship that melded our Vietnam Veterans together throughout this unpopular war.

Our students attended dawn services at The Entrance and Terrigal and the noon service at The Entrance. Our ANZAC tradition and spirit is in safe, respectful hands.

Tumbi Take 3 Success

Over 100 students from Years 8, 9 and 10 headed to The North Entrance Beach to participate in the largest beach clean-up yet, with the Take 3 program leaders Mandy Marechal, Tim Silverwood and 5 other Take 3 volunteers.

Students were briefed on the marine audit and the importance of their contribution before donning gloves, grabbing tongs and garbage bags and heading to the lakeside and beach to start the clean up and marine audit.

Take 3 is a local environmental initiative taking the world by storm because of its simplicity and effectiveness. It involves encouraging people to pick up 3 pieces of rubbish to save our waterways and wildlife.

Our students were Standing Tall in their uniform picking up everything - yes, everything - cigarette butts, plastic bags, fishing line, chairs, undies, wrappers, straws, foam, shoes, glass, papers, plastic, plastic and more plastic...including a $20 note!!

Students collated the information using audit sheets, which will now be used in a nationwide program aimed at gathering data on the types of rubbish found on our beaches.

Our students did an incredible job and deserve to be really proud of themselves. It was a dirty, stinky and filthy job, but all of our students chipped in and had go. At the end of the day there were 29 huge bags - a tonne of rubbish and 2 cubic metres of rubbish.

Take 3 volunteers were blown away by the enthusiasm of our students as they trawled the beaches, scrambled under trees and traipsed through thick bush to pick up everything they possibly could.

Mrs Player named Australian Secondary Principal of the Year

Mrs Player has been recognised as the Australian Secondary Principal of the Year at a ceremony in Adelaide. She received her award from Minister Peter Garrett who thanked her for what she does for Australia's young people.

Mrs Player was deeply humbled by the announcement and expressed her gratitude for the award. She paid tribute to the tremendous team effort put in by students, community, staff and colleagues who make education a successful life changing experience for all in our local area. Mrs Player looks forward to continuing to lead the campus and work with everyone to achieve the goal of the brightest future for all students and the community in our global world.

Her citation follows

Rodney Hill awarded Gosford Rotary Vocational Excellence Award

Congratulations to those students who are fortunate to be enrolled at our campus for 2013.

Year 7 students begin their time with us on Wednesday 30 January. Year 7 are to wear their full uniform on this day and bring their equipment for learning. All Year 7 students will meet in the COLA area and move to the gym when the bell rings at 8.00am.

Year 8, 9 and 10 students continue their time with us from Thursday 31 January. They need to wear their sport uniform, bring equipment for learning and be prepared to participate in Sport on Thursday afternoon. The majority of students have already selected their sport choice on our campu Moodle in December 2012. All Year 8, 9 and 10 students will report to their 2012 Roll Call group when the bell rings at 8.00am.

All students are to wear sports uniform on Thursday. It would be wise to bring a hat and sunscreen given our recent weather.

Our canteen will operate as normal from Wednesday 29 January. A current price list appears on this website in the Our School section.

Thank you to our parents and carers for ensuring their children are ready and organised for a postive start tot he 2013 campus year. We will continue to shine brightly, recognising that success is our norm.

Announced on World Teachers' Day, Mrs Player has been selected as the New South Wales finalist in the Australian Secondary Principal of the Year category of the 2012 Australian Awards for Outstanding Teaching and School Leadership. The Awards recognise the exemplary contribution of teachers and school leaders to the education of young people.

Mrs Player paid tribute to the wonderful staff at the campus whose dedication and enthusiasm makes it possible for the students and community of the campus to continue to explore ways of building the best future possible for all.

Abby McNeill delivered a moving oration on behalf of all students in the Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community at the Remembrance Day Service at The Entrance. Abby told of the hardship, mateship and sacrifices made by those in the armed services in defence of their values, land and loves. Abby was congratulated by those present for her respectful delivery. She made us all proud of the wonderful young people who will uphold these moving Australian traditions.

Chelsea wins Japanese scholarship

Chelsea Phipps is one of 200 students Australian wide who have won a prestigious Kizuna Scholarship. Chelsea was one of over 1300 applicants. To win this scholarship she submitted an outstanding application which saw her progress through to the interview stage (which she obviously performed very well in). This means she is off to Japan in December for a 2 week, all expenses paid, cultural immersion journey that will involve...... living with a Japanese family, going to school, sightseeing, eating delicious foods, taking in the sights from the north island Hokkaido and experiencing Japanese culture first hand. Congratulations Chelsea we are proud of you!

Congratulations to students, staff and families for the great teamwork that has taken place to achieve strong NAPLAN results in Year 9. We have every reason to be proud!

Individual results for every student in Years 7 and 9 will be distributed to students on Thursday and Friday of the week commencing 17 September.

Students who have not shown strong growth will be interviewed by the Principal in the first weeks of next term to plan for continued improvement. Students who have achieved strong growth will recieve a congratulatory letter with our highest achievers recognised with a Principal's Award.

Tumbi wins Rock Eisteddfod

The cast of "Welcome to my Nightmare" have scooped the prize pool in the Open Division of Rock Eisteddfod 2012. Our brilliant students worked closely with 6 very talented teachers to design and execute a brilliant showpiece of dance and drama depicting the nightmares had by teenagers.The Dream Master masterfully weaved a web of fright around an unsuspecting sleeping girl. He was assisted by his two assistants to transport the girl through scenes of broken dolls, evil clowns, the blood bride, zombies and an asylum culminating in a blood curdling wakening. Words cannot express how proud we are of this team of over 120 students and their commitment to teamwork and excellence. Their hard work has been rewarded and recognised by peers and the media! They are stars and their teachers masters of their craft!

Congratulations to Sommer Black, Brian Gardiner and Trent Harris-Maher who have won the prestigous and highly challenging Future Home 12 Competition, beating all Year 9 and 10 students in the Hunter Central Coast Region. This competition requires students to design a housing structure that meets sustainability demands. Students must explain and justify their design and choice of materials against a set criteria.

Ms Turner and Mr Horton were brilliant mentors for our winning team.

Congratulations to Jack Venables who has been selected as a member of the Combined High Schools OPEN Hockey team and he is only in Year 10. This is a magnificent achievement for this highly talented sportsman.

Let's Talk Recognition

The theme of Reconciliation Week is Let's talk Recognition. On the simplest level that is about recognising effort and talent. On a higher level, it is about truly recognising Aboriginal people and their place in this great nation.

This week several staff members and I were lucky to hear Dr Wendy Hanlon, a Kamlilaroi woman and Bronwyn Chambers, a Darkinyung woman share their inspirational and selfless journey. Wendy has been a key person in developing our understanding of Aboriginal English and how to best recognise the communication needs of Aboriginal learners. Bronwyn is known to many and has founded the Darkinyung Language Group. This group has resurrected the Darkinyung language in the hope that one day it will become a language readily spoken.

We recognise the tremendous contribution that both women, along with too many to name here, have made to build our understanding of Aboriginal Australia.

We also recognise the tremendous work we willingly do on this campus with Kuriwa AECG and our families to make the campus a centre focused on the spirit and actions of Reconciliation for the long term wellbeing of all.

Sports Champions

Our students continue to excel on the sporting field at local, region and state level. Brad has just achieved the highest level in state swimming and will be contesting the national titles in three individual events. Jordie has blitzed the Year 7 State Golf Championships. Michael has been selected in the U15s Greater Sydney Reds Rugby League. Jack has been selected in the Open CHS Hockey Team. Soccer, hockey, boys¿ and girls¿ rugby, squash, AFL, athletics and cross country and the Premier's Sporting Challenge continue. Good luck to all!

ANZAC Day Commemoration

How proud were we all to be able to take part in the local community ANZAC Day services. As always TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus participated in three services each of which were well represented by students and staff. The three services were

· Dawn Service at The Entrance

· Dawn service at Terrigal

· Noon service at The Entrance

ANZAC Day is central to who we are as Australians and what makes us focus in on a fair go for all and the keen idea of mateship – for males and females! In short the very values we teach at Tumbi are those central to the spirit of ANZAC. It is wonderful to see how many Australians, young and old, hold these values as important to who we are and what we do.

Ginny Clark, a graduate of TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus delivered the oration to The Entrance service.

It was a moving moment to march with our great students and those from Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community as together we remember that freedom isn't freeand we enjoy our lifestyle because of the sacrifice of many.

Year 7 students will attend the campus from 8.00am on Monday 30 January

Year 8, 9 and 10 students will attend the campus from 8.00am on Tuesday 31 January

All students are expected to be in full campus uniform including covered in black leather shoes. Shoes must cover te wole foot. Slip on shoes and canvas shoes do not meet safety requirements. This is a Department of Education and Communities and campus expectation.

Year 10 have now completed their School Certificate exams and we all wait in anticipation for the results. After all the preparation, time, enthusiasm, and learning, their results come down to personal efforts. Students were congratulated by the Board of Studies supervisors for the mature manner in which they approached the very stressful time of their exams. This also was a solemn occasion as for some of the Board of Studies supervisors that have worked with the Campus for many years it was the last School Certificate exam. Our campus and community would like to thank them for their support, and look forward to the great results of our focused students.

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus held its annual rock concert showcasing the amazing musical, performance and design talents of our students. The teamwork and expertise displayed by students in planning and executing this concert was way beyond their years. Our gym rocked to the sounds of soloists, duets and full on bands. The support of the audience made the evening particularly special with comunity members being moved to comment on the maturity and talent of our students.

Rock eisteddfod success

Rock Eisteddfod was a brilliant memory for all. The campus and community absolutely rocked from the time the students and staff left on the two coaches and one equipment truck. They were primed, prepared and a powerful creative and performing force. Our cast and crew stormed the stage with their performance—they were brilliant—flawless and just so professional. The judges comments were awesome and reflected the time, energy, effort and enthusiasm that has gone into this year‘s performance. The outcomes were -

Excellence in choreography
Excellence in performance skills
Excellence in drama
Excellence in set design

- and as a result a televised performance on Channel 9 in November - only available to the top 5 schools…….. bring it on. Guess we are national finalists!!

Congratulations to Ms Goodwin, Ms Bandy, Ms Carpenter, Ms Jones, Mr Chiittick, Mr Horton and Ms Yeaman for the amazing gift you all have in bringing out the creative best in our students. This is the stuff of community cohesion and pride which cannot be measured but is felt and remembered.

Thankyou to Mr Brailey for his support and leadership of the Rock Eisteddfod Team and a huge thankyou to every staff member who has assisted the students and staff leading up to this event. Tumbi wins Asia Literate

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus has been successful in receiving a federal grant to extend its curriculum to ensure students are prepared for Australia's place in the global economy and in the Asian Region.

We have received notification that ur program to embed Asian Studies across our campus has caught the eye of the Asia Literate Foundation. We will be busily working on our HSIE programs and extending our knowledge and understanding of Asia through English and CAPA courses.

College cup winners

Forty five boys contested the College Cup Trophy at Berkeley Vale this week. The boys worked hard to have two extremely successful wins and retain the College Cups in the U14‘s and U16‘s.

The U14‘s ended up being victorious 56-19 in what was a close first 15 minutes, the class of the Tumbi boys showing through and ended up running away with the game. Starring performers in the game were Michael, Eathan, Jayden and Ryan, with honourable mention to our flying centre Matena.

The U16‘s found themselves in a tighter tussle before finally displaying why they have been so successful throughout the year winning 36-10. The outstanding performers in the match were Nathan (who through a ball that would have left Benji Marshall staring in awe), Joel (you would have fallen over watching him play if you knew he‘d never played contact sport in his life) and the big unit Christian. Again honourable mentions to Nathan, Jack and Liam.

Both teams and campuses played the games in amazing spirits and their behaviour is to be congratulated.

Successful visit - Kashima High

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus is honoured to be hosting students and staff from Kashima HS in Tanabe Japan as part of the Wyong Shire Sister City Program.

Twenty excited Japanese nationals arrived on Monday to sample the delights and treasures of our campus, community and the Central Coast. Our VIPs met their host families on Monday afternoon and friendships commenced immediately.

Our visitors have not only sampled Aboriginal culture and campus life but have also seen and sampled our usual campus routines. They were hoping that the Canteen would sell wittichty grubs!

Students, staff and community have learned so much from this visit. We look forward to continuing this valued program in partnership with Wyong Shire Council.

Congratulations to our talented artists - Hayley, Amy, Hannah and Adara who have taken out the Secondary Schools Division of the Take 3 Art Competition. Our students have done debris collected from our beautiful beaches and turned it into a magnificent artwork telling the following story

"We have created an underwater painting showing a creature born from a polluted ocean and debris. This goddess/witch of the sea is having the life strangled out of her. She has tenticles cut from plastic milk containers, plastic bag hair with styrene highlights, a plastic bag bikini and a staff made from rubbish. Bottles float around here and she consumes the whole space."

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus once again entered a strong field in the annual Bay-to-Bay Fun Run. Our first finishers achieved times of 51 minutes while our novices finished their walk in just on 2 hours. At this campus we believe in the importance of the role both physical and emotional wellbeing play in shaping people's strong sense of self and relationships with each other - student and staff. Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College –Tumbi Umbi Campus High School would like to announce a fabulous new initiative in Mathematics teaching programs. We have registered all of our students to use the teaching/learning resource at www.mathsonline.com.au . You may have seen the recent TV advertisements by sponsors McDonalds Australia. It is through this sponsorship that Mathsonline, which previously cost its many thousands of satisfied clients $40 per month, is now FREE to our students!

Some of the features that this program includes:

¿ Full lessons for each concept with a voice over and numerous examples of varying difficulty. Every lesson has a pause and rewind facility to help students grasp concepts at their own pace.

¿ Every lesson has an accompanying printable summary and worksheet to consolidate the concept, with full worked solutions also provided.

¿ A student¿ ongoing use and progress in the program is stored for the student and their teacher to see at any time.

¿ The program can be accessed from any internet ready site, not just at school.

¿ The entire Year 7 to 12 program is available to every student, not just their particular year group or course.

¿ Parents may register to get weekly updates on their child¿ program use and progress, by clicking on the „arents Area¿tab within their child¿ account.

¿ Many more features will also be made available on-line over coming months.

Given that the program covers most of the concepts that we teach, and as good as this resource is, we make it clear that this program was never intended by its creators to replace the wonderful work that our Mathematics teachers do. This program is best used as a support/supplement to the classroom teaching/learning experience.

All students have been isued with their own passwords by their Maths teacher. Students are encouraged to use this resource as directed by their own teacher.

Tumbi Earth Day

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus marked Earth Hour by holding Tumbi Earth Day. Our students arranged for the campus to hold a whole day of lights out lessons. To visitors it may have looked we had not paid the electricity bill but they quickly congratulated our students on their initiative when the purpose of the day was explained!

A large group of students also worked with four teachers to trim shrubs, clear branches, plant new groundcovers, pick up a small amount of litter, paint our totems and decorate Earth Day Disks for our COLA area.

Tumbi Earth Day was another example of the success we achieve every day at Tumbi because we care about each other, our campus and our community!

JOINT SELECT COMMITTEE ON CYBER-SAFETY'S

ONLINE SURVEY OF YOUTH

I am writing to advise you that the Australian Parliament's Joint Select Committee on Cyber-Safety is currently inquiring into the nature, prevalence, implications of cyber-safety and cyber-bullying.

I encourage your students to participate in the Committee's online survey of Australian young people.

The Committee believes the input of young people is critical in its inquiry and will be invaluable in making reasoned conclusions and viable recommendations to government. The survey is available at www.aph.gov.au/cybersafety. The Secretariat can also provide you with materials for websites, pamphlets or newsletters and other similar mediums. These materials are available to download at www.aph.gov.au/jscc/download .

As you are aware, over the past decade there has been an exponential growth in the use of mobile phone technology, social networking media and the use of the Internet by children and young people for personal and educational uses. These new technologies and social media have brought significant benefits to young Australians, but also expose them to a number of risks. The Committee was appointed to inquire and report on the nature and complexities of the online environment, including ways to support schools to reduce the incidence and harmful effects of cyber-bullying.

In its final report, the Committee will present recommendations to the Government to promote cyber-safety and reduce cyber-bullying in the Australian community. More information about the Committee is available at http://www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/jscc/index.htm.

The survey of youth is one of the consultative strategies undertaken by the Committee to reach young people directly and will available for your students to complete until Wednesday 27^th April. To ensure the survey is audience appropriate, the Committee has developed two similar questionaries: one for 5-12 year olds and one for 13-18 year olds. The survey is completely anonymous and it will not be possible for the Committee to identify anyone who participates in the survey.

Outsmart Bullies

One important life skill for all people is assertive communication. In no way does this mean aggression and violence. Assertive communication simply means being about to communicate your opinion and/or needs clearly to those around you in words and body language. it allows you to outsmart bullies!

Children who have good assertive communication skills rarely report being harassed by others. These children give off an aura of confidence.

A local group are looking at developing assertive communication skills with young people. Take a look at the flyer - it may be of interest to you or someone you know.

Helping Students Make Speeches

Public speaking is feared by most people. It is often reported as being more feared than death!

In this day and age, our young people need to have strong public speaking skills.

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus has several assessment tasks which involve public speaking. Teachers give much support. We do need your support and so do your children.

Here are some tips

spend some time listening to your child's speech
try to avoid doing anything else at the same time because your child needs to practise looking at faces when they talk. If we give our children our full attention we are better placed to give them feedback on how they present
time them with a stopwatch so that they can pace their speech to reach the correct time.

Make sure they practise:

saying the ends of words clearly
using a variety of pitch and pace to add expression and interest
look at the audience while speaking glance at speech cards - they are valuable and can be keywords, pictures or key points

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus held its annual induction ceremony to officially induct its 24 student leaders. nThe ceremony was attended by proud parents and family members, proud principals and student leaders from partner schools, local community leaders and supporters of the campus.

Once again invited guests and long-term supporters where full of proase for the students and staff, commenting glowingly about the qualities readily dispayed by students and the magnificent facilties and talented, dedicated staff.

TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus has had a successful launch of its students working with students wellbeing program. The program harnesses the energy of over 50 student leaders to run workshops with groups of students from Year 7 to 10. The workshops cover a range of topics from coping with change through to making new friends. Students will be engaged in this program every wednesday for the rest of the year.

Our Wellbeing Team, under the leadership of Mrs McInnes have worked tirelessly to make this happen because we believe that our students deserve every chance to build their leadership skills so they can contribute positively to our great community as adults.

Our workshop leaders have done a tremendous job of bringing this program to their peers. Young people are amazing when they are given the chance to shine!

We look forward to sharing more stories of this program over the coming months.

This has been done to ensure parents and carers are well informed about their child's education.

Futsal Team - National Success

Our boys Futsal Team have travelled to beautiful Runaway Bay in Queensland to represent NSW as State Champions at the National Titles. Under the careful eye and dedicated expertise of their coach, Mr Shane Knight, the boys have had a successful campaign.

They were too strong for the teams in their pool making it through to the semi-finals as the second top team in the entire competition. Alas the dreaded penalty shoot out got them in the end and their campaign ended with a one point loss in extra time despite doing everything possible.

Congratulations goes to Steve W who was selected into the Allstars Team. We, unfortunately could not release our coach to take that team.

We are so proud of our boys and their coach. Their achievment as Under 14s is awesome!

Campus Uniform from 2011

After consultation, there has been a change to our girls uniform items. The girls now have a white shirt specifically made for girls. This replaces the previous shirt which was a unisex shirt for boys and girls. Students who have been trialling the shirt report that it is really comfortable and allows them better movement. The girls also report that they look smart!

NAPLAN Results and Planning

NAPLAN is one example of how we assess student progress through their education. NAPLAN is a snapshot of achievement on one test on one day.

Everyday in every school teachers and parents look deeply at students to ensure that everything else we do in classrooms throughtout the year, beyond the very brief time that NAPLAN operates, supports students in their learning.

The NAPLAN results for every student who completed NAPLAN in May 2010 has been mailed to parents and carers.

Overall the results are pleasing for students especially when looking at individual results and rate of growth across our diverse student poplulation. Individual results reflect

the attendance rate of each student
the support of parents and carers
the effort put in by all staff from K - 9 to ensure that students continue to progress

This campus has had planning meeting with our partner primary schools to look at how we will continue our great work together to ensure that students continue to make solid progress all the way from K - 12 and beyond.

Positive Relationship Days

Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 November will see all students in Years 7-9 participating in our annual Positive Relationship Days. All students are combined and then regrouped into cross-age groups to complete activities and challenges designed to exte4nd their knowledge of other students in their campus. Over the years we have witnessed this program build and strengthen relationships between students across all years.

Letters will be sent home with students later this term outlining the activities. Thank you to all students, parents and carers for supporting these great days!

Year 10 and School Certificate

Our fantastic Year 10 students have returned to campus focused on achieving personal best in the upcoming School Certificate exams commencing on Monday 8 November, continuing through to 10 November when students will complete the Computing Skills Test online. We have allowed for unplanned hitches with technology by also earmarking Thursday 11 November as a backup day for Computing Skills. With over 88 000 students sitting the Computing Skills Test online, it is better to be safe than sorry!

Parents and carers are reminded of the importance of ensuring that their child arrives at the campus by 8.00am on the day of the exams. Should any student experience an unexpected illness or misadventure on the day of the exams, it is essential that the campus be notified before 8.00am. Rural Fire Service Cadetships

Our neighbours could have been forgiven for asking about the regular visits of so many emergency service vehicles to our campus on Thursday afternoons. The reason is really simple - our students have been involved in high level training in emergency procedures as part of the Rural Fire Service Cadetship Program. Students, emergency services and local volunteers have worked alongside each other to share knowledge and expertise in so many different areas of emergency management. We often take for granted the level of skill, knowledge and courage shown by volunteers and members of our emergency services in times of community need.

At the end of the program, students at TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus graduated from the Rural Fire Service Cadetship Program under the watchful eye of the NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Fitzsimmons, other members of the upper echelons of the Rural Fire Service, parents, friends and staff member.

The students have shown a commitment to building community and learning how to protect community in times of hardship. Their interest and learning in this program was guided by the expertise of Inspector Geerin, volunteers from local brigades and the enthusiasm of Mr McCallum co-ordinating teacher.

Male and female students stepped outside the usual activities of 15 year olds to learn about, and sample the activities of all aspect of emergency services. The level of maturity shown by the students was a credit to all, their families and our campus. Many have expressed an interest in taking their training further and volunteering in the services.

"Our community can only become stronger and safer with such interest and dedication being shown by our young people," said Commissioner Fitzsimmons as he and Mrs Player, Campus Principal presented the cadets with their graduation certificates.

This great program is yet another example of how our campus works with the agencies to strengthen our community while building socially responsible young people who constantly model "Standing Tall". We are proud of our students and our association with the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Director General's Award Winner

Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College Tumbi Umbi Campus and its partner schools of Bateau Bay PS, Brooke Avenue PS, The Entrance PS and Wamberal PS are amongst the forty-two New South Wales public schools recognised with one of the education department's most prestigious awards for their significant contribution to public education in the state.

The Director-General's School Achievement Award is given out annually to schools that have made a significant contribution to the achievement of the goals of the department and the promotion of public education in NSW.

The department's director-general Michael Coutts-Trotter said the schools were brilliant examples of the strength of public education in the state.

"It is the dedication and commitment of our teachers, principals and support staff that make our education system world class," he said, "demonstrating innovative teaching and learning programs, and for this they are commended.

"These schools have been recognised for implementing a diverse range of programs, from quality teaching of literacy and numeracy, to the performing arts, leadership and for adding to a positive school environment.

"Not only have they delivered strong outcomes for students, but they have also captured the support of their communities.

"Public education in NSW has deep commitment to teaching values, respect and responsibility to all students, and in doing so we provide quality learning environments for students to learn and grow.

Year 10 Interviews –always a great opportunity for students to face a reality check around the world of work (Wednesday 4 August)

Central Coast Public Education Appreciation Awards– where Claire Ellis, Felicity Robinson, iRock Team, Anthony Angel and Rodney Hill will be recognised for their contribution to our campus, college and education in general (Thursday 5 August at Lake Munmorah HS)
Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community Variety Concert– our talented students (and staff) will perform as part of the broader Public Education community in our area. What a night it promises to be at the Dolphin Theatre. Our items will include CSI Tumbi with the brilliant Tayla, Matt and Nathan sharing their magical talents. (Thursday 5 August)

Step to the Future Forum

Once again our great student leaders are heavily involved in organising this prestigous state-wide student leadership event.

The forum focuses on showcasing how young people can achieve amazing things when they have the will and want to channel their energy and effort into their goals. This year's forum will see over 1000 students from across the state converge in Sydney to participate in this event. No doubt many lives will take a different course because of the experiences of the day and many new doors will open.

On Thursday 22 July our students were triumphant in the performance competition iRock at Laycock Theatre! Our performance titled "Generation Why" took out the audience by surprise, transporting them into the world of cyberbullying and the impact of irresponsible use of technology of our young people. Not only was the piece topical, it was presented in a way that nobody watching the piece was in any doubt of the devastating impact of cyberbullying.

Clearly the judges were enamoured by what they saw, awarding judges' honours for

Excellence in Costume
Excellence in Choreography
Excellence in Design resulting in our team being declared overall winners.

The roar in the crowd was deafening with the honours being justification for the tremendous effort that went in by the whole campus to produce this outstanding performance piece.

The entire campus and its community is incredibly proud of this well deserved recognition! We look forward to sharing snippets of it with you at a later stage. Preparing to Move to Year 11

Our students and their families are all involved in planning for the move from the middle years campus at Tumbi Umbi Campus to the senior campus at The Entrance. Our staff have been working quietly away behind the scenes to ensure that every student and family has access to the best information available to make an informed decision about subjects for Years 11 and 12.

GATS woodturning

The Woodturners Association have been working closely with the college and the campus to provide extension workshops for our many talented woodworkers. The association is made up of volunteers with a love of wood and its properties. The skills they possess are absolutely amazing as is their dedication to sharing those skills with young people. The girls hockey team played the final three rounds of the Sydney North knockout. They were victorious defeating

These wins saw our girls take out the Sydney North Championship for the third successive year.

Fantastic team effort and a brilliant show of talent by Abbey, Maddison, Rachael, Maddison, Tahlia and Molly and their coach and manager.

Debaters rock

Our Year 9 Debating Team resoundingly defeated the A team from a nearby selective school. Hannah, Brodie, Taylor and Logan were clear winners when it came to the topic that 'the Australian Government should filter the Internet'. Our team were affirmative and did an amazing job at driving home their argument. They had some clever rebuttles, pulling apart the opposition's team line!

Our debaters and their coach absolutely beamed with gracious pride, and rightly so! They made an absolutely fantastic effort; utilising all of the feedback given from their previous debates and WON!

We are proud of their effort and graciousness. Public speaking is clearly a strength of this campus, its students and dedicated staff.

New uniform items for 2011

The campus has been looking closely at current uniform items. Currently our girls wear a unisex shirt as their dress shirt. It looks fabulous but the unisex style does not suit young women. It has been decided by students and the P&C that the the girls dress shirt will be changed to a style which best accommodates the female shape. An image of the shirt will be put in our newsletter along with samples of all uniform items.

We have also added a scarf to our winter uniform. All uniform items are available at Lowes stores in Bay Village and Westfield Tuggerah. Our students will look even more terrific in these items.

Partnership with WIEL shines

This campus has been moving forward with its approach to student wellbeing. Our Head Teacher Wellbeing and the Wellbeing Team have worked together to develop, deliver and refine several workshops aimed at building students' understanding of strategies we can all use to better manage the demands of modern society. On Friday 4 June our magnificent drama troupe travel to Sydney to participate in the next round of Innovat Theatresports. All students (teachers and parents) are excited about the challenge of improvisation and look forward to showing just what can be done by talented middle years students. Go Team!

Theatresports - Tumbi Triumphant

Our Year 9 and 10 Drama students combined to form an intermediate team to compete in the Improv Australia All Schools Theatresports Challenge. This year there were over 200 schools competing for a chance to make it to the semi finals. The competition was held at Wyong Community Christian College who proved to be great hosts for the night.

Our team included Clayton Hamilton, Emily Hamilton, Jazmyne Wardell, Taylor Whiteford and Clare Hauesler. The competition was tough, tough, tough but our team stood tall. After a quick pep talk and lots of cheering and support from the many Tumbi supporters, we ended up coming in a much deserved second place...just one point difference between us and the winner!!

It is interesting to note that our team defeated a team from a performing arts high school!

We are now off to the semi finals in the next few weeks, with the Grand Final being held at the Enmore Theatre on June 20th. The amount of talent, team spirit and community support was incredible. Once again we are so proud of our great students who courageously put themselves forward for such a confronting experience! Their talents, dedication, team spirit and performance skills are amazing as are those of their dedicated teachers and supportive parents and carers.

We look forward to our trip to the Grand Final at the Enmore Theatre in June!

Sporting Success

Tumbi Umbi Campus continues on its winning way! This week alone we have seen our teams successfully compete and progress to the next round in Bill Turner Cup for Soccer, Rugby 7s, Surfing Championships and our annual Athletics Carnival.

The carnival was extremely well attended with event entries at an all time high. Additional events were scheduled with long distance events rejoining the carnival. Outstanding performances were seen across all events with many personal best times and distances recorded. House and age champions are still being finalised due to the huge number of entries.

Thanks is extended to students, parents/carers, staff and the team at Mingara for their fabulous support.

ANZAC Day Oration and Assemblies

On Sunday 25 April, Emily O'Brien, Campus Captain presented the oration at the The Entrance ANZAC Day Service. Her topic was Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels and her oration was outstanding. She held the attention of several thousand attending the service as her words and personal account moved many. The silence and contemplation was deafening.

Morning Service at The Entrance where our captains Emily O'Brien and Matthew van der Kley along with student leaders joined Mrs Player. Student leaders also marched as part of Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College and Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community.

All students were exemplary role models of "Standing Tall" for all young people in our community. In doing so showed that the memories and spirit of the ANZACs are truly alive in our fine young people. How honoured we all are to have them as our future community leaders.

Our Campus ANZAC Assemblies were held on Wednesday 28 April. These assemblies were conducted by our student leaders who welcomed guests, ran proceedings, performed items and respectfully observed the occasion of remembrance of the sacrifices made by so many. The audience listened in reflective silence as Mr Allan Fletcher President of The Entrance RSL addressed them on war and the fact that there are no winners in war, only those left behind.

Transition 627 Well Underway

Ten outstanding student leaders and the Year Advisers for 2011 accompanied our Principal, Mrs Player to our partner primary schools to meet with Year 6 students. During these visits student leaders had the opportunity to talk directly with Year 6, answer their questions, share experiences of being in Year 7 and showcase what is like to be a student at Tumbi Umbi Campus. These visits are highly successful and build an excellent foundation for strong relationships between all students at our Campus. The Campus is very appreciative of the enthusiasm and support of our partner primary schools for these visits and extremely proud of our great student leaders.

Winter Uniform

Winter is quickly approaching and all students need to be dressed suitably every day in full uniform. The P & C endorses the correct wearing of the uniform and supports the Campus with the not wearing of hoodies or jumpers/jackets with logos other than our Campus logo. We have recently added a Campus scarf to our uniform. It looks fantastic and it is warm! The scarf and a fashionable pair of long plain black pants are available for all girls through Lowes. Both items cost less than those available at fashion outlets.

We have an excellent agreement between the Campus and Lowes who supply quality school wear at affordable process. Their shops are located at Bay Village and Tuggerah Shopping Centre. Lowes also donate 5% of all uniform sales directly back to the campus. We use that money to upgrade resources for all students.

Thanks to all parents, carers and students for making sure we are all wearing our correct uniform proudly.

Athletics Carnival Success

Monday May 4 was a day to be remembered. The annual Tumbi Umbi Campus athletics carnival was held at Mingara, showcasing the amazing athletic talents of our students and staff. Records were broken and all in attendance were 'standing tall' in participation and should be proud of their achievements. Congratulations to Mrs. Rumpler and her loyal apprentices, student leaders Reece Fogarty and Harriet Crowder for their professional organisation.
