High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE)

HPGE at TUC

The High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy is implemented in every public school in NSW and promotes engagement and challenge for every student in every school. All staff at Tumbi Umbi Campus have participated in professional learning to be able to identify and cater for the learning needs of high-potential and gifted students in their classes and across the school. All teaching staff are committed to quality teaching and high expectations in their teaching practices to ensure all students are supported to achieve excellence.

As part of our HPGE policy, Tumbi Umbi Campus offers a High Potential (HP) Class to cater for student who show higher levels of potential in the intellectual domain. Students can apply for a place in the HP class. Selections are based on an application form, entry tests, grades across learning areas, standardised tests, and teacher observations. Students in the HP class are taught the same core curriculum and are also given opportunities in each of the learning areas to extend and challenge their knowledge and skills. The opportunities and challenges include projects; group tasks; STEM challenges; problem solving activities; extension tasks; excursions; University visits and guest speakers.

Furthermore, Tumbi Umbi Campus provides a range of opportunities for students to achieve personal excellence in the 4 domains of potential - Intellectual, Physical, Creative and Social-Emotional.
